Renault to sell cars in China through Alibaba's Tmall

Renault SA will sell cars to Chinese consumers through Alibaba Group Holding Ltd.'s Tmall platform as the automaker expands its partnership with the e-commerce giant to bolster sales in the country.

According to a March 7 post in Alibaba's news site Alizila, further details on the enhanced collaboration will be announced in late April. However, Tmall marketing director Liu Bo said the Chinese retailer is exploring new applications of the internet to cars, adding that it expects the partnership between navigation company Autonavi and Dongfeng Renault — a joint venture between the French company and carmaker Dongfeng Motor Group Co. Ltd. — to provide new smart services to Renault's models as early as 2018.

Meanwhile, marketing director for automotive business Lu Huan said Alibaba will also pursue further collaboration with Nissan Motor Co. Ltd. and Mitsubishi Motors Corp. through its partnership with Renault.

The company, based in the Paris suburb of Boulogne-Billancourt, first announced Feb. 19 that it was teaming up with Alibaba's business-to-consumer e-commerce platform with a goal of increasing brand recognition in China.

Renault, which began featuring Tmall's cat logo during the Formula One World Championship, also said it aims to sell 400,000 units of nine local passenger car models by 2022.

Alibaba previously agreed to collaborate with automakers Ford Motor Co. Bayerische Motoren Werke AG, better known as BMW; and SAIC Motor Corp. Ltd to explore opportunities in retail and technology.
