Calif. regulator prohibits gender discrimination in car insurance pricing

California Insurance Commissioner Dave Jones issued a regulation prohibiting the use of gender in setting rates for private passenger car insurance in the state, effective Jan. 1.

The regulation mandates that all auto insurers operating in the state file a revised class plan removing the use of gender as a rating factor. Jones said the regulation would ensure that auto insurance rates depend on factors within a driver's control, instead of uncontrollable personal characteristics.
