Seven-Eleven Japan sales up 4.2% YOY in February

Seven & i Holdings Co. Ltd. said March 15 that total February sales at Seven-Eleven Japan grew 4.2% year over year.

Same-store sales grew by 0.9% from the year-ago period. Customer numbers fell 0.4% during the month, while average spend per customer increased 1.3% year over year. Store count increased to 20,876 from 20,733 outlets in January.

The company's overseas unit, 7-Eleven Inc., saw net sales fall 7.3% year over year after gasoline sales sank 14.5%. The unit's merchandise sales grew 1% during the month.

Seven & i's Ito-Yokado general merchandise store chain posted a 1.8% decline in total sales in February. Same-store merchandise sales fell 2.6% as the number of customers slumped 2.6% year over year and average spending per customer grew 0.1%.

Meanwhile, the supermarket chain York-Benimaru saw total sales fall 0.5% year over year as same same-store sales declined 2.3%. Customer numbers dropped 2% and average customer spend dropped 0.4%.

Sogo & Seibu, the Japanese company's department store unit, posted a 9.5% year-over-year drop in total sales as same-store sales fell 0.3%.

Seven & I Food Systems Co. Ltd., which operates the Denny's restaurant chain in Japan, reported that total sales in February fell 1.5% year over year, despite same-store sales growing 0.1%. Customer numbers fell 3.6%, but average customer spend grew 3.9% year over year.
