Va. coal exports up 23.8% YOY in July

Coal exports from the Hampton Roads port facilities in Virginia increased 23.8% year over year to 3.4 million tons in July but declined 3.6% from June's total, according to data obtained Aug. 7 from the Virginia Maritime Association.

At Norfolk Southern Corp.'s Lamberts Point facility, which primarily handles metallurgical coal, coal exports reached nearly 1.4 million tons in July, up 27.7% from the 1.1 million tons of coal delivered in the year-ago period.

Kinder Morgan Inc.'s Pier IX facility, which mostly handles thermal coal, increased 36.9% year over year to 768,921 tons of coal, compared to 561,462 tons in July 2017.

Dominion Terminal Associates LLP, owned by coal producers Contura Energy Inc. and Arch Coal Inc., saw its coal exports rise 13.6% year over year to roughly 1.3 million tons of coal, compared to 1.1 million tons in the same period in 2017.
