Microsoft unveiled a new range of Surface-branded products, including a dual-screen Android smartphone, at an Oct. 2 event in New York.
They included three devices set to hit store shelves by early November — the Surface Laptop 3, Surface Pro 7 and Surface Pro X — and two more that will be available ahead of the December holidays.
The new Surface Laptop 3, set to launch Oct. 22, is a 13-inch laptop that runs on a quad-core, 10th generation Intel Corp. processor that is 2x faster than the Surface Laptop 2 and three times more powerful than Apple Inc.'s Macbook Air, said Panos Panay, Microsoft's chief product officer. The 15-inch model runs on a new processor that Microsoft co-engineered with Advanced Micro Devices Inc.
Both the 13-inch and 15-inch laptops are encased in a fully-illuminated aluminum chassis that excludes the standard rubber bumpers surrounding laptop screens. The machines also include batteries that can last an entire day and charge to 80% in under an hour.
Pricing for the 13-inch Surface laptop will start at $999, while the 15-inch model will start at $1199.

Also launching Oct. 22 is the latest iteration of Microsoft's flagship tablet-laptop hybrid computers, the Surface Pro 7. The new device, priced at $749 and up, runs on Intel's 10th generation processor and charges via USB-C instead of the proprietary connector that Microsoft has used with most of its previous Surface computers.
Robin Seiler, corporate vice president of devices at Microsoft, demonstrated some of the Surface Pro 7's new features, including the ability to add and delete text on a Microsoft Word text document using a Surface Pen and a new Earphone app that integrates phone calls into the devices. The Surface Pen will now be usable in Microsoft Excel files as well, for the first time ever.
Seiler also introduced Surface Earbuds, a new pair of wireless earbuds to join Microsoft's noise-canceling Surface headphone. Each earbud has two built-in microphones and filters for noise reduction and touch sensors that allow calls and music to be navigated with taps and swipe gestures. The earbuds will also include integration with Microsoft Office, with features including real-time captions during presentations and the ability to move PowerPoint slides via swipes.
The Surface Earbuds will go on sale this holiday season at a starting price of $249.
The Surface Pro X is set to launch in early November. It is a brand new ARM-based 13-inch hybrid computer that runs on custom variant of QUALCOMM Inc.'s Snapdragon processor, the Surface SQ1, which Microsoft co-developed with the chipmaker. The device, which will start at $999, is both thinner and lighter than the Surface Pro 7 and includes a built-in dock above the keyboard to both house and charge the Surface Pen.
Microsoft's chief product officer also unveiled a new dual-screen Surface device set to launch in the 2020 holiday season: the Surface Neo. It runs on Microsoft's new Windows 10X operating system and is powered by an 11th generation Intel processor. A slim Bluetooth keyboard accessory can magnetically attach over one of the screens when typing is required.
Microsoft is also getting back into the smartphone market with another dual-screen device launching in late 2020, called the Surface Duo. The smartphone runs on Google LLC's Android operating system and features two side-by-side 5.6-inch displays connected by a 360-degree hinge.
