EU hits Russia with extended economic sanctions over Ukraine annexation

European leaders agreed to extend for another six months, or until mid-2018, the economic sanctions it imposed on Russia over its actions in Ukraine, Reuters reported.

European Council President Donald Tusk tweeted that the EU is "united on roll-over of economic sanctions on Russia."

The sanctions target Russia's energy, defense and financial sectors. They were originally imposed in July 2014 after Russia annexed Ukraine's Crimean peninsula.

The sanctions were scheduled to expire in January 2018, after the EU prolonged them by six months in June.
