Union Pacific Corp. said its normalized net income for the first quarter was $1.31 per share, compared with the S&P Capital IQ consensus estimate of $1.37 per share.
EPS rose 9.7% year over year from $1.19.
Normalized net income, which excludes unusual gains or losses on a pre- and after-tax basis, was $1.16 billion, a gain of 6.1% from $1.09 billion in the year-earlier period.
The normalized profit margin climbed to 20.6% from 19.3% in the year-earlier period.
Total revenue totaled $5.61 billion, compared with $5.64 billion in the year-earlier period, and total operating expenses decreased from the prior-year period to $3.64 billion from $3.78 billion.
Reported net income grew 5.7% from the prior-year period to $1.15 billion, or $1.30 per share, from $1.09 billion, or $1.19 per share.
