Canadian nonfarm payroll employment rises by 10,686 in January

Nonfarm payroll employment in Canada rose by 10,686 jobs in January after a revised 13,500 decrease in December 2017, ADP's Canada National Employment Report showed.

The goods-producing sector posted increases in employment, driven by the construction sector, which added 8,186 jobs. Manufacturing and natural resources and mining added 1,466 and 2,773 jobs, respectively.

In the service-providing sector, trade/transportation and utilities, professional and business services, leisure and hospitality and other services posted increases in employment, while the information, financial activities and education and healthcare posted declines in employment.

Statistics Canada said Feb. 9 that the unemployment rate rose to 5.9% in January.
