Kia Motors Corp. is recalling about 507,587 vehicles in the U.S. over an electronic glitch that may prevent airbags from deploying in the event of a crash, the company said in an emailed statement.
The recall reportedly applies to 2010-2013 Kia Fortes, 2011-2013 Kia Optimas and 2011-2012 Kia Optima Hybrid and Sedona vehicles.
Kia said it is working with its supplier on the issue.
The news comes after an announcement by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, or NHTSA, in March that it was probing why some airbags failed to deploy in some of the company's cars and its affiliate Hyundai Motor Corp. after crashes in which four people were reportedly killed and six were injured, Reuters reported June 8.
About 1.1 million U.S. vehicles have now been recalled by the two Korean automakers in total, the news outlet reported.
According to NHTSA, the airbag control module under investigation was built by German auto supplier ZF Friedrichshafen AG, the report added. In March, Kia said it was working with the regulator.
