East Kentucky Power seeks bids for 2-month coal supply at Spurlock units

East Kentucky Power Cooperative Inc. is seeking term coal for delivery at unit 1 and 2 of its coal-fired H.L. Spurlock power plant in Mason County, Ky.

East Kentucky Power issued a request for proposals on June 13 for contract deliveries of up to 100,000 tons of coal per month beginning Aug. 1, for a term of up to two months. The utility said it will consider all fuel options.

The co-op is seeking coal spec'd at a minimum 11,000 Btu/lb and maximums of 15% ash and 7 lb SO2/MMBtu, all on an "as received" basis. All bids must be accompanied with a full proximate analysis including grindability, mineral/ash including trace elements, ultimate analysis, ash fusions, and slagging and fouling factor calculations.

Units 1 and 2 at the Spurlock power station can receive coal by barge on the Ohio River at milepost 414.1 or by rail at Charleston Bottoms, Ky., via CSX Transportation Inc. or TTI Railroad.

Proposals must be submitted by 11 a.m. ET on June 20. They should be emailed to or sent by U.S. mail to the attention of Gail Varner at 4775 Lexington Road (40391), P.O. Box 707, Winchester, KY 40392-0707.
