General Motors recalls 268,675 vehicles over faulty engine, seatbelt software

General Motors Co. issued a safety recall for 268,675 vehicles over faulty engine and seatbelt software, days after it announced recall of over 3.4 million pickup trucks and SUVs in the U.S. to fix a brake problem.

GM will pull a total of 177,276 Chevrolet Malibu vehicles of model year 2018 to fix an error in the Engine Control Module software of the vehicles that may result in the fuel injectors being disabled. This would prevent the engine from starting and may cause a stall, increasing the risk of a crash, according to National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

According to a safety recall report, only 1% of the total number of Chevrolet Malibu vehicles subject to the recall are believed to be affected by the defect.

GM will also recall 91,399 Chevrolet Express and GMC Savana vehicles of model year 2019 to reprogram the seatbelt-unfastened warning light in the cars that may not light up for nearly five seconds after the ignition is moved to the "on" or "start" position.

Without the seatbelt warning, the driver may forget to fasten the seatbelt, increasing the risk of injury in the event of a crash, the regulator said.

GM has yet to provide a schedule for the recalls but said dealers will fix the faulty parts free of charge.
