Glencore declares force majeure on Queensland coal shipments

Glencore Plc has declared force majeure on coal shipments from Queensland, Australia, as a result of the damage done to railway lines from the recent tropical cyclone, according to a statement emailed to S&P Global Market Intelligence April 6.

Rail network operator Aurizon Holdings Ltd. said earlier this week that repairs to four major coal systems — Newlands, Goonyella, Blackwater and Moura — could take up to five weeks.

Glencore is continuing to receive updates from Aurizon about the extent of the damage and likely restart of rail operations.

QCoal Pty Ltd., Yancoal Australia Ltd., Peabody Energy Corp. and BHP Billiton Group have also declared force majeure on shipments from their Queensland mines.
