Former Blue Cross North Carolina CEO found guilty of child abuse, DWI

Former Blue Cross and Blue Shield of North Carolina CEO Patrick Conway was found guilty of charges arising from a car crash on an interstate while his children were in the back seat, The Charlotte Observer reported.

A district court judge found him guilty of driving while impaired and misdemeanor child abuse following the June 22 traffic accident. Conway's attorney had argued that the state's child abuse laws are not applicable to cases where children do not sustain injuries and when the risk of injury is accidental.

Conway intends to appeal, and sentencing was postponed until that occurs, although he cannot drive until his license is restored, according to the report.

Conway resigned at the request of the company's board in late September. North Carolina Insurance Commissioner Mike Causey had urged Conway to resign after the insurer allegedly covered up the top executive's arrest.

Blue Cross and Blue Shield of North Carolina and Cambia Health Solutions Inc. also halted their proposed merger. Conway was set to lead the combined structure under the merger as CEO.
