FERC grants Northern Natural Gas in-service request for Minn. gas facilities

Northern Natural Gas Co. can start service on a compressor station associated with the Northern Lights 2019 and Rochester Expansion projects, according to a letter to the company from the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission.

In the Oct. 10 notice, the commission said the Berkshire Hathaway Energy unit had adequately stabilized construction work spaces and made sufficient progress on restoration efforts, based on an Oct. 2 status report. On Oct. 8, the developer had asked to place into service Unit 3 at the Faribault compressor station in Rice County, Minn.

The Northern Lights 2019 expansion was designed to provide 101,411 Dth/d of gas transportation service to customers including Centerpoint Energy Minnesota Gas, Flint Hills Resources LP and Xcel Energy Inc. on behalf of Northern States Power Co. - Minnesota. The expansion consists of 10 miles of 24-inch-diameter greenfield pipeline in Hennepin and Wright counties in Minnesota, among other project facilities.

The Rochester expansion includes 2.2 miles of 16-inch-diameter greenfield branch line and supporting infrastructure. The project also includes increasing the maximum allowable operating pressure and relocating a pressure regulator. Minnesota Energy Resources Corp. is the sole project customer and will receive 37,093 Dth/d of transportation service.

On July 31, FERC granted Northern Natural's request to start service on a pipeline loop that is part of the Northern Lights 2019 and Rochester expansion projects in Minnesota. The commission approved the expansions in February. (FERC docket CP18-534)
