The Railroad Commission of Texas issued 885 original drilling permits in December 2017, down 25.44% from the 1,187 permits released in November and down from the 1,009 permits issued in December 2016.

For the month, 792 permits were to drill new oil or gas wells, 85 were for wellbore recompletion and eight were to re-enter plugged wellbores. The permits included 175 for oil-only drilling, 67 for gas-only drilling and 586 for oil or gas drilling.

The commission said it processed 514 oil, 80 gas and 26 injection well completions in December. For December 2016, the commission reported 430 oil, 93 gas and 20 injection well completions.

Year-to-date well completions stand at 6,914, down 33.95% from the 10,468 well completions recorded in the same period in 2016.

Midland had the most oil well completions, with 288, along with 19 gas well completions. The Lubbock area recorded 62 oil well completions and no gas well completions for the month.
