Morrisons to shed about 1,500 managerial jobs

Wm Morrison Supermarkets PLC became the latest U.K.-based grocer to cut managerial-level jobs as it plans to shed about 1,500 store management positions and create 1,700 customer-facing roles, The Telegraph reported Feb. 1.

The grocery chain will remove the warehouse manager role from all of its stores, the newspaper added, citing the company's communication to its staff.

Morrisons retail director Gary Mills reportedly said the staffing overhaul, which includes the creating positions such as shop checkout staff and shelf stackers, was a bid to "serve customers better with more front-line colleagues in stores."

Mills added that the company is committed to "redeploy as many affected colleagues as possible."

Morrisons' move follows similar management restructurings by peers Tesco Plc and J Sainsbury Plc.
