Canadian Solar secures 18-MW project in Japan's 1st solar auction

Canadian Solar Inc. won a 17.87-megawatt-peak solar project in Japan's first solar energy auction held Nov. 21.

The company expects to connect the project to the Japanese grid by 2021. Chugoku Power Electric Co. will purchase the electricity from the project under a 20-year power purchase agreement at 16 cents per kWh, according to a Dec. 5 release.

During the auction, Japan awarded projects totaling 141.3 MWac at an average price of 18 cents per kWh. The country plans to run a second energy auction in July 2018 and a third auction in late 2018.
