US foreign investment body clears Thales' Gemalto acquisition

French aerospace and defense giant Thales SA's proposed acquisition of Dutch digital security company Gemalto NV has received regulatory clearance from the Committee on Foreign Investment in the U.S., the two companies said Sept. 5.

Thales and Gemalto have now obtained six of the 14 regulatory clearances required for the deal, including securing antitrust clearances in China, Israel and Turkey, and obtaining clearances relating to foreign investments in Australia and Canada.

The two companies are still seeking antitrust clearances in Australia, the EU, Mexico, New Zealand, Russia, South Africa and the U.S., and regulatory clearance relating to foreign investments in Russia.

The companies said the transaction is expected to close before the end of 2018, shortly after all regulatory clearances have been granted.
