A miner was found dead in the Cardinal coal mine in Kentucky, which is operated by Warrior Coal LLC, a subsidiary of Alliance Resource Partners LP, 14 News reported Sept. 5, citing a company statement.
The miner was found unresponsive in the vicinity of a battery-powered scoop inside the mine, according to the report, and was transported to the surface where he was attended to by emergency respondents.
The man, 39-year-old Jeremy Elder, was pronounced dead around 4:45 p.m.
This is the second fatality in a coal mine reported in Kentucky in just over a month. The first was on July 31, when a man died inside the Paradise Mine in Muhlenberg County.
Overall this year, this is the fourth coal mine fatality in the commonwealth, according to the federal Mine Safety and Health Administration, and the eighth reported nationally.
There were 12 coal mining fatalities in the U.S. in 2018, according to the administration.
