Anglo American targets 25% capacity boost at Moranbah, Grosvenor coal mines

Tyler Mitchelson, CEO of Anglo American PLC's metallurgical coal unit, said the company plans to increase the processing capacity for the Moranbah and Grosvenor mines in Queensland, Australia, by 25% to 20 million tonnes, Bloomberg News reported May 30.

"I don't anticipate making any material investment into the mining complex, it's more about getting improvements out of the assets," Mitchelson said.

A study is underway, with optimization of existing facilities slated for completion over the next few years.

The Grosvenor mine is expected to reach its nameplate capacity by the end of the year, with Anglo American aiming to produce 20 million to 22 million tonnes of coal in 2018, compared to 19.7 million tonnes in 2017.
