Tencent invests in Japan's PlatinumGames

Tencent Holdings Ltd. invested an undisclosed sum in PlatinumGames, a video game developer based in Japan.

As a result of the investment, the two companies have formed a partnership. PlatinumGames CEO Kenichi Sato said the investment has no effect on the company's independence, and it will continue to operate under its existing corporate structure.

PlatinumGames, known for titles such as Astral Chain and Babylon's Fall, hopes the tie-up with Tencent will allow it to gain a wider global perspective.

The Osaka-based company will use the funding to expand from game development into self-publishing.

Established in 2007, PlatinumGames is the resulting entity from the merger of Japanese game studios ODD Ltd. and SEEDS Inc.
