Newmont Goldcorp Corp. temporarily suspended operations at its Penasquito gold mine in Mexico's Zacatecas state after an illegal blockade resumed at the site.
The blockade resumed following the suspension of government-sponsored talks to resolve issues with a trucking contractor and the local San Juan de Cedros community.
Protest leader Felipe Pinedo earlier told S&P Global Market Intelligence that about 500 people were at the Peñasquito blockade and that talks with government and Newmont Goldcorp had yet to start.
He said protesters had raised concerns over water quality.
The company said Sept. 15 that it is willing to resume the dialogue after other parties return to the government-sponsored discussions and "not through illegal and unproductive blockades that hurt local communities."
The same protesters blockaded the mine in March, but decided to end it in June after the government offered to mediate an agreement.
