Kellogg Co. has introduced a plant-based jerky brand called Leaf Jerky, food industry website Food Business News reported Sept. 12.
The soy-based snack will initially be available only in cracked peppers and herb flavor but other varieties are expected to be launched soon, the news outlet said. Each serving reportedly has 11 grams of protein and 80 calories.
The new brand will be unveiled at the Natural Products Expo East in Baltimore. Amy Shouldice, founder of Leaf Jearky and brand manager of new ventures at Kellogg, said in an interview with the site: "My hope is that we fill a vegan need for a delicious, savory protein snack and provide an easy way to incorporate more plant protein for people looking to reduce their meat consumption."
The Michigan-based cereal maker plans to introduce Leaf Jerky in test markets this year and eventually expand its distribution in 2020, the news site added.
Earlier this month, Kellogg-owned Morningstar Farms L.C. also launched a new plant-based meat brand called Incogmeato in a bid to maximize the growing demand for vegan products.
