The Paris commercial court imposed a €4 million fine on Amazon.com Inc. for introducing "abusive" clauses in its contracts with third-party sellers, Reuters reported Sept. 3, citing French-language website Nextinpact.
Sought for comment, Amazon told S&P Global Market Intelligence that the decision was based on an old set of terms. "The court ruled on a limited number of clauses, most of which we already updated earlier this year," a company spokesperson said.
In July, the European Union's antitrust watchdog launched an investigation into whether Amazon's use of sensitive data violates EU competition rules. Around the same time, Germany's competition body said it reached an agreement with Amazon that will see the e-commerce platform overhaul its terms of services for third-party sellers.
