US road safety body to probe another fatal crash involving Tesla car

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration will investigate another fatal crash that involved a Tesla Inc. electric vehicle, Bloomberg News reported Jan. 8, citing a statement from the U.S. road safety body.

According to an incident report from the Indiana State Police, the Tesla car slammed into the back of a parked firetruck on an Indiana highway, leaving the wife of the Tesla's driver dead after succumbing to injuries sustained during the crash. The incident took place Dec. 29, the same day another fatal crash involving a Tesla car took the life of two vehicle occupants in Los Angeles.

The Indiana State Police ruled out drugs and alcohol as a contributing factor of the Indiana crash.

Bloomberg said the NHTSA did not confirm whether Tesla's Autopilot feature was activated during the crash. The latest investigation in Indiana is in addition to the NHTSA's growing list of probes into collisions that involved automated driver-assist technologies. Of the 23 crashes that the regulator had reviewed, 14 reportedly involved Tesla cars.

Tesla did not immediately respond to S&P Global Market Intelligence's request for comment.
