Westar, Great Plains complete merger of equals, form Evergy

The $15 billion stock-for-stock merger of Midwest electric utilities Westar Energy Inc. and Great Plains Energy Inc. completed June 4 to create new holding company Evergy Inc. The new company will be headquartered in Kansas City, Mo., with operational headquarters there and in Topeka, Kan.

Update: Alaska approves Hydro One's merger with Avista

Concerns over the future of a state-owned hydro facility at first appeared to be an obstacle to Hydro One Ltd.'s plans to acquire Avista Corp. But a settlement and state regulatory safeguards smoothed the way for Alaska to become the first state to approve the merger.

GenOn Energy closes sale of 810-MW gas plant in Pennsylvania

NRG Energy Inc. subsidiary GenOn Energy Inc. has completed the sale of the 810-MW Hunterstown CC gas-fired facility in Straban Township, Pa., to private equity firm Platinum Equity Capital Partners IV, L.P.. The plant is located in PJM Interconnection's Metropolitan Edison Co. zone.

Enel scoops up 73.4% stake in Brazil's Eletropaulo for €1.27B

Italy-headquartered Enel SpA scooped up a 73.4% stake in Brazilian power distribution company Eletropaulo Metropolitana Eletricidade de São Paulo SA in a deal valued at approximately €1.27 billion. Enel also plans to invest roughly €343 million to subscribe to a subsequent capital increase at Eletropaulo.

PPL Corp. acquired New York-based solar energy solutions provider Safari Energy LLC for an undisclosed amount, the company announced May 31.

MDU Resources Group acquires asphalt, concrete supplier

MDU Resources Group Inc. acquired Little Falls, Minn.-headquartered Tri-City Paving Inc. for an undisclosed amount.
