Walmart expands emissions reduction program Project Gigaton in China

Walmart Inc. expanded March 29 its emissions reduction program called Project Gigaton to China and aims to cut 50 million metric tons of greenhouse gas emissions by 2030 in the country.

The U.S. big-box retailer said it will recruit all of its export and domestic Chinese suppliers, beginning with the top 100, into the initiative. Walmart President and CEO Doug McMillon unveiled Project Gigaton during an event at Tsinghua University.

More than 400 suppliers in China, India, the U.S. and other countries have so far joined Walmart's Project Gigaton, which seeks to cut emissions in its global supply chain by 1 billion metric tons by 2030.
