Haley to quit as US ambassador to United Nations

Nikki Haley resigned as U.S. ambassador to the United Nations, following an oval office meeting with President Donald Trump.

"Nikki Haley, ambassador to the United Nations, has been very special to me. She's done an incredible job," Trump said. "She also is somebody that gets it … we've done a fantastic job together."

Trump said Haley indicated roughly six months ago that she would want to take a break once she hit the two-year mark as U.N. ambassador. Haley will leave her post at the end of the year, according to the president.

Diplomats were said to regard Haley as an approachable member of Trump's foreign policy team, especially early in the the administration.

"Countries may not like what we do, but they respect what we do," Haley said during her departure announcement.
