Beginning May 24, Twitter Inc. will no longer be available on Roku Inc., Android TV and Microsoft Corp.'s Xbox, the company announced in a tweet.
The move comes as the social media company attempts to comply with the European Union's General Data Protection Regulation, which takes effect May 25. The regulation is a new series of rules and laws designed to strengthen privacy protections for EU citizens, which include requiring a company to obtain unambiguous affirmative consent from a user before collecting or processing the user's personal data.
Twitter apps will still be available on Apple Inc.'s Apple TV and Amazon.com Inc.'s Fire TV as the microblogging platform continues its push into live video, Variety reports. During the recent Digital Content NewFronts event, Twitter boosted its video offerings by signing more than 30 agreements with media companies such as Walt Disney Co., Viacom Inc. and Comcast Corp.'s NBCUniversal Media LLC. The partnerships span across entertainment, news, lifestyle, music, gaming and sports content.
