European markets open lower after Asian stocks dive

European markets opened lower Dec. 6, following a sharp decline in certain Asian markets.

The Euronext 100 was down 0.54% to 1,036.19, and the Stoxx Europe 600 index lost 0.65% to 384.21 as of 10:35 a.m. Central European Time.

France's CAC 40 retreated 0.49% to 5,349.24. Germany's DAX was down 0.99% to 12,918.74 and the Euro Stoxx 50 lost 0.78% to 3,542.66 as of 10:50 a.m. Central European Time. The U.K.'s FTSE 100 was also down, by 0.13%, around 10:10 a.m. London time.

Over in Asia, Japan's Nikkei 225 lost 1.97% to close at 22,177.04, its biggest daily fall since March 22, and Hong Kong's Hang Seng Index shed 2.14% to 28,224.80, its biggest single-day loss in over a year, Reuters reported.

China's Shanghai Composite was down 0.29% to close at 3,293.96. Meanwhile, the MSCI's index of Asian shares, excluding Japan, dropped to a two-month low. It was down 1.48% to 543.20 as of 11 a.m. Central European Time.

U.S. President Donald Trump is due to announce Dec. 6 that the U.S. government will recognize Jerusalem as Israel's capital, a move that may fuel violence in the Middle East.
