Principal Financial sees earnings rise YOY in Q4'16, ups dividend

Principal Financial Group Inc. reported 2016 fourth-quarter operating earnings of $372.0 million, or $1.27 per share, compared with $303.2 million, or $1.02 per share, in the year-ago period.

The S&P Capital IQ consensus normalized EPS estimate for the quarter was $1.15.

Net income available to common stockholders for the fourth quarter of 2016 was $318.0 million, or $1.09 per share, compared with $253.6 million, or 86 cents per share, a year earlier.

Operating earnings for the full year 2016 came in at $1.33 billion, or $4.55 per share, versus $1.27 billion, or $4.26 per share, in 2015.

The S&P Capital IQ consensus normalized EPS estimate for 2016 was $4.42.

Net income available to common stockholders for 2016 was $1.32 billion, or $4.50 per share, compared with $1.21 billion, or $4.06 per share, in the previous year.

The company's board declared a common stock dividend of 45 cents per share for the first quarter of 2017, up from the previous dividend of 43 cents per share. The dividend will be payable March 31 to shareholders of record as of March 6.
