Hugo Barra, global vice president of Chinese smartphone maker Xiaomi Inc., is leaving the company, the executive announced in a Jan. 22 tweet.
Barra elaborated on the decision in a Jan. 23 Facebook post, saying he wanted to return to Silicon Valley from Beijing and will do so after taking some time off. He added that his tenure at Xiaomi will conclude in February, but he has been asked to become an adviser to the company.
Barra joined Xiaomi from Alphabet Inc.'s Google Inc. in 2013 and was tasked with getting the phone brand known worldwide.
Xiaomi senior vice president Xiang Wang will take over the company's global operations, Bloomberg News reported Jan. 23.
