Gold Fields is granted environmental approval for Chilean gold-silver project

The Atacama environmental assessment commission approved the environmental impact study for Gold Fields Ltd.'s Salares Norte gold-silver project in Chile.

CEO Nick Holland said the company will now come up with a funding plan, update the feasibility study and advance toward a construction decision in the first half of 2020.

Mine construction is expected to be completed by the end of 2022 at a capital cost of US$834 million.

The mine is expected to produce 3.7 million gold-equivalent ounces during an initial 12-year mine life.

A feasibility study in February on Salares Norte outlined a net present value of US$654 million, discounted at 7.5%, a 25% internal rate of return and a 2.2-year payback period.
