Alibaba's Youku strikes licensing deals with NBCUniversal, Sony

Alibaba Group Holding Ltd.'s Chinese video streaming service Youku unveiled major licensing agreements with NBCUniversal Media LLC and Sony Pictures Television Inc.

The agreements will give Youku subscribers access to hundreds of film titles from the two U.S. studios for free, which can be streamed through multiple Youku distribution channels, including its flagship online platform, SmartTV solutions and set-top boxes. Financial details of the deals were not disclosed.

The deals will give Youku users early access to the latest and upcoming movies from the two studios, such as Sony Corp.'s "Blade Runner 2049" and "Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle," as well as NBCUniversal's "Jurassic World 2: Fallen Kingdom" and "Darkest Hour."

Both studios also agreed to license the streaming rights to a raft of their blockbuster Hollywood movies, such as the full "The Fast and the Furious," "Despicable Me" and "The Mummy" franchises from NBCUniversal; and the "Resident Evil," "Smurfs" and "The Spider-Man" movies from Sony.

Additionally, NBCUniversal will provide special entertainment programs to be hosted exclusively on Youku.

Youku recently struck a deal with Netflix Inc., which acquired its 32-episode detective drama series "Day and Night" for global distribution.

The streaming service has also partnered with Walt Disney Co., Time Warner Inc.'s Warner Bros., Viacom Inc.'s Paramount Pictures, 21st Century Fox Inc. and other major Hollywood studios.

NBCUniversal is a unit of Comcast Corp.
