Fiat Chrysler expands US Ram pickup recall over tailgate issue

Fiat Chrysler Automobiles NV's North American arm is expanding its recall of Ram pickup trucks to about 693,128 more vehicles, the automaker said Sept. 9.

The pickups have potential issues with the tailgate locking mechanisms, which could cause the tailgate to open unexpectedly, Fiat Chrysler told S&P Global Market Intelligence, adding that it is not aware of any related accidents or injuries.

The "unintended opening of the tailgate while driving may result in a loss of unrestrained cargo from the truck bed," Fiat Chrysler wrote in a letter to affected customers, according to Detroit Free Press. "Lost cargo may create a road hazard to operators and occupants of other vehicles, and can cause such vehicles to crash without prior warnings."

The automaker said in its statement to Market Intelligence that loose cargo should be secured while driving.

According to the company, the following models are affected: 2015-2017 Ram 1500, 2500, 3500 pickups with an eight-foot bed and power locking tailgate; 2013-2014 and 2018 Ram 1500, 2500 and 3500 models built before April 1, 2018, with a six- or eight-foot bed and power locking tailgate.

In August 2018, Fiat Chrysler recalled 1.1 million Ram pickups to fix the power locking mechanism in the tailgates.

"The expansion is a response to an FCA review of customer data, which is consistent with the company's continuous monitoring of vehicles in the field," Fiat Chrysler said, adding that more than one-third of the vehicles initially included in the recall have been serviced.
