A U.S. jury has awarded Apple Inc. $539 million in damages over the iPhone maker's patent row with Samsung Electronics Co. Ltd., which has persisted since 2011, Reuters reported.
The decision comes after five days of deliberations in a retrial, in order to determine the amount that Samsung has to pay Apple. The patent dispute involves the design of iPhones as well as the display of apps on the screen.
Samsung was found to be liable in 2012, yet a dispute on the amount of damages caused a retrial. Samsung already paid Apple $399 million as compensation for some of the patents in question.
Samsung said it will "consider all options to obtain an outcome that does not hinder creativity and fair competition for all companies and consumers." If the verdict is upheld on appeal, Samsung has to pay Apple an additional amount of around $140 million.
