Toyota to end sales of diesel cars in Europe

Toyota Motor Corp. said March 5 that it will stop selling diesel-powered passenger cars in Europe amid strong consumer demand for hybrid electric models.

The Japanese automobile major said its new-generation Auris models will be offered only with regular gas and hybrid electric powertrains.

Toyota plans to phase out diesel engines from its passenger vehicles in Europe this year but will continue selling diesel-powered commercial models such as Hilux, Proace and Land Cruiser.

Its hybrid electric car sales in Europe rose 38% year over year in 2017 to 406,000 units, accounting for 41% of total sales for that year. Meanwhile, diesel cars accounted for less than 10%.
