UK home secretary says agencies must have access to encrypted messages

U.K. Home Secretary Amber Rudd said on March 26 that intelligence agencies should have access to encrypted messaging systems, according to The Guardian.

This comes after reports that the suspect in the Westminster terror attacks used the messaging service WhatsApp.

Rudd also suggested that internet companies should stop posting extremist materials online, as they now qualify as de facto "publishing companies," with all the responsibilities that come along with the title, The Guardian reported.

While not ruling out new legislation on the matter, Rudd said she would first hold talks with tech companies, starting in the week of March 27, the publication reported.
