UK Parliament group asks Visa to explain outage

Charlotte Hogg, the CEO of Visa Europe Ltd., has until June 15 to answer a number of questions about the card company's service outage on June 1, posed in writing by Nicky Morgan, chair of the U.K. Parliament's Treasury Select Committee.

Morgan asked when Visa first became aware of the problem; when the CEO was informed; and how many cards were affected and for what reason. Further, she asked what caused the hardware malfunction and what controls the firm has in place to prevent such failures.

Morgan also asked Hogg if Visa would compensate merchants who were affected by the outage, which Visa blamed on a hardware failure. The issue affected card payments across Europe, lasting several hours on a Friday evening.
