Benesse Holdings Inc. said its normalized net income for the fiscal fourth quarter ended March 31 came to a loss of ¥91.78 per share, compared with a loss of ¥2.68 per share in the year-earlier period.
Normalized net income, which excludes unusual gains or losses on a pre- and after-tax basis, was a loss of ¥8.83 billion, compared with a loss of ¥257.5 million in the year-earlier period.
The normalized profit margin fell to negative 7.6% from negative 0.2% in the year-earlier period.
Total revenue fell year over year to ¥115.99 billion from ¥120.26 billion, and total operating expenses grew 6.7% year over year to ¥127.75 billion from ¥119.75 billion.
Reported net income totaled a loss of ¥14.35 billion, or a loss of ¥149.20 per share, compared to a loss of ¥581.0 million, or a loss of ¥6.04 per share, in the prior-year period.
For the year, the company's normalized net income totaled ¥169.81 per share, a decline of 26.0% from ¥229.46 per share in the prior year.
Normalized net income was ¥16.33 billion, a decline of 26.1% from ¥22.12 billion in the prior year.
Full-year total revenue totaled ¥463.26 billion, compared with ¥466.40 billion in the prior year, and total operating expenses came to ¥434.04 billion, compared with ¥430.57 billion in the year-earlier period.
The company said reported net income totaled a loss of ¥10.71 billion, or a loss of ¥111.29 per share, in the full year, compared with income of ¥19.93 billion, or ¥206.79 per share, the prior year.
