Peabody Energy to permanently shut Ind. coal mine in October, lay off 121

Peabody Indiana Services LLC has decided to permanently close its Somerville Central Mine in Oakland City, Ind., due to uneconomical business conditions.

In a WARN notice to Indiana authorities, the Peabody Energy Corp. subsidiary said Aug. 2 that the closure will result in laying off approximately 121 employees on Oct. 4. The company plans to offer employees comparable positions at its other locations like Wild Boar, Francisco, Bear Run and Wildcat Hills mines.

But Peabody Energy also noted that it may ask a limited number of employees to remain after Oct. 4 for the mine reclamation period.

The Somerville Central Mine served one power plant and produced almost 2 million tons of coal in 2018, according to S&P Global Market Intelligence data.
