ILS, cat bond issuance in '17 reach $8.15B

The catastrophe bond and insurance-linked securities market issuance reached $8.15 billion in 2017, taking the size of the outstanding cat bond market to more than $29 billion, according to Artemis.

Recently completed deals include Texas Windstorm Insurance Association's Alamo Re Ltd. (Series 2017-1) at $400 million, Allstate Corp.'s Sanders Re Ltd. (Series 2017-2) at $200 million, Great American Insurance Group's Riverfront Re Ltd. (Series 2017-1) at $190 million and Avatar Property & Casualty Insurance Co.'s Casablanca Re Ltd. (Series 2017-1) at $100 million.

Two new cat bonds in the market could add another $550 million. Issuance in 2017 is estimated to hit $8.7 billion by the end of the second quarter with $1.33 billion of catastrophe bonds scheduled to mature by June 30.
