Telcos, tech companies team up for 5G industry body

Telecom operators, tech firms and a number of other companies have teamed up to set up 5G Slicing Association, a new industry body that will work to tackle requirements and potential applications for 5G network slicing.

The founding members of the organization include China Mobile Ltd., Deutsche Telekom AG, Digital Domain, Fraunhofer FOKUS, GE, Huawei Technologies Co. Ltd., CEPRI of SGCC, Tencent Holdings Ltd., Telecom Italia SpA and Volkswagen AG.

The 5G Slicing Association intends to study key technical issues, cooperate with slicing related standards development organizations and promote test beds and trials, to understand network requirements of different verticals.

"[The] 5G Slice Association will be the platform to connect the telecom industry with vertical industries. It will help to establish a common understanding of network slicing, establish an enriched industrial chain, incubate application innovation, and explore new business model of network slicing," China Mobile Communication Co. Ltd. Research Institute General Manager Zhang Tongxu said.

In 2017, Nippon Telegraph and Telephone Corp. unit NTT DOCOMO and China Mobile Communications Corp. teamed up with Ericsson AB and Nokia Corp., respectively, to demonstrate 5G network slicing techniques.
