Panasonic, France's EasyMile plan to launch driverless shuttles in Denver

Japanese electronics company Panasonic Corp. and French driverless vehicle manufacturer EasyMile are planning to roll out a driverless shuttle program in Denver, Colo., in spring 2018, according to a Dec. 5 release from Panasonic.

The two companies will work with the Colorado Department of Transportation, the City and County of Denver and the Regional Transit District on the project.

According to the release, the state's autonomous vehicle legislation will back Panasonic and EasyMile's plan to introduce an autonomous vehicle technology that will connect RTD's 61st & Peña Station light rail station to bus routes on Tower Road in Denver. The program was announced at the opening of EasyMile's first North American headquarters within the Panasonic building.

The United States House of Representatives on Sept. 6 passed the Self Drive Act of 2017, which laid the groundwork for self-driving cars throughout the U.S.

The Japanese company and the state transportation department are also preparing a statewide deployment of an ecosystem of connected cars and autonomous vehicles to reduce crashes and improve traffic flow, the release said.
