Amazon, Walmart, others face probe into alleged patent infringement

The U.S. International Trade Commission, or USITC, said Aug. 28 that it will investigate certain products that contain filament light-emitting diodes sold by Amazon.com Inc., Walmart Inc., Target Corp., Bed Bath & Beyond Inc. and IKEA AB following a complaint made by the University of California.

The university on July 30 sued the retailers for alleged infringement of light bulb patents held by the school. According to the complaint, the patented filament LED light bulbs seen at some products sold by the involved retailers were designed by a team of researchers at the university.

In the latest announcement, the USITC said its probe is based on the university's complaint but noted that it has not yet made any decision on the merits of the case.

The university is seeking a limited exclusion order and cease and desist orders on the retailers, according to the release.

The companies did not immediately respond to S&P Global Market Intelligence's requests for comment.
