Netflix Inc. has partnered with mobile carrier au and cable operator J:COM, both owned by KDDI Corp., as the streaming giant grows its footprint in Japan, The Hollywood Reporter reported.
Au is offering a ?7,500 monthly plan, which includes unlimited Netflix access on smartphones, as well as voice and data, whereas a ?5,500 monthly plan includes 25GB of data. Users can stream in HD on up to two devices for an additional $2.40, and stream in 4K for up to four devices for an additional $6.35.
Meanwhile, J:COM will offer Netflix on its cable systems, details of which have yet to be announced. According to Japanese media reports cited by Variety, Netflix content will be available on J:COM beginning in the fall of 2019.
In order to access Netflix, a special receiver due for launch in fall 2019, is necessary. J:COM, which reached five million subscribers in 2013, currently has 17 channels on five services.
