Brewer Anheuser-Busch Inbev SA/NV announced sustainability goals for 2025 with a focus on smart agriculture, water stewardship, circular packaging and climate action.
The company said the delivery of its 2025 sustainability goals will connect thousands of farmers to technologies and skills, ensure water access and quality in high-stress communities, increase recycling content, and add renewable electricity capacity to its regional grids.
The new effort, which extends for the first time to the company's external partners, is the latest attempt by a global brand to keep up with consumers' demands for development through sustainable means, according to the Financial Times.
Global companies like Coca-Cola Co. and McDonald's Corp. have taken similar steps to lessen the environmental impact of their packaging in recent months, while General Motors Co. and Walmart partnered in 2016 to support renewable energy investments.
"Sustainability is not necessarily something we have to do that will have a cost that does not help the business. Sustainability is our business," the Financial Times quoted AB InBev CEO Carlos Brito as saying. "If there's no water, there's no beer; it's that simple."
Brito refused to disclose how much the company would invest for the new goals but said its goal of having 100% of its electricity contracted from renewable sources by 2025 would require around $2 billion in investment by its suppliers, according to the Financial Times.
"There are costs everywhere but because they make business sense, you can say it's a cost [and] I can say it's an investment," he reportedly said.
