Mnuchin: Allies know US will enforce secondary sanctions after Iran deal pullout

Washington's allies are aware that the Trump administration will be reinforcing sanctions targeting non-U.S. entities now that the U.S. has withdrawn from the Iran nuclear deal, Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin told a Senate panel.

"We've already communicated with our European partners, both through [Secretary of State Mike] Pompeo and myself, that we will be enforcing the secondary sanctions," Mnuchin said during a May 22 appearance before the Senate Appropriations subcommittee.

The ranking member of the subcommittee, Sen. Chris Coons, D-Del., said the sanctions could negatively affect U.S. relations with its allies.

"I'll just say I'm very concerned about how that will affect our relations," he said. "I agree with the broader objective of restraining, hopefully ending, Iran's aggressive and bad behavior, but the division with our allies at a critical moment concerns me."
