Verizon Communications Inc. and Nokia Corp. completed the first over-the-air, end-to-end data transmission on a commercial 3GPP 5G New Radio network in Washington, D.C.
The transmission was part of the two companies' ongoing demonstrations of 5G New Radio, or NR, technology before commercial 5G mobile service launches in 2019, according to a Sept. 6 news release.
In August, the companies completed the first transmission of a 3GPP NR 5G signal to a receiver situated in a moving vehicle. In June, the companies completed a series of outdoor data sessions over the 5G NR standard.
Verizon plans to launch 5G residential broadband service in Los Angeles, Sacramento, Calif., Houston and Indianapolis in the second half of 2018, followed by a mobile 5G offering.
The 3rd Generation Partnership Project, or 3GPP, unites telecommunications standard development organizations, known as "organizational partners" and provides their members with a stable environment to produce the reports and specifications that define 3GPP technologies.
