Texas drilling permits in July drop from prior-month, YOY numbers

The Railroad Commission of Texas released 912 original drilling permits in July, a decrease from the 1,001 permits it issued in June and 1,153 permits in July 2018.

For the month, 836 permits were to drill new oil or gas wells, 68 were for wellbore recompletions and eight were to reenter plugged wellbores. The permits included 537 for oil or gas drilling, 212 for oil-only drilling and 58 for gas-only drilling.

The state oil and gas regulator said it processed 499 oil, 156 gas and 42 injection well completions in July, against 753 oil, 157 gas and 29 injection well completions in July 2018.

Year-to-date well completions came in at 5,749, a decrease from 6,514 well completions recorded in the same period a year ago.

The Midland area still has the most oil well completions in the state at 381 in July, as well as the highest number of gas completions at 78. The San Antonio area ranked second for oil completions with 24, while the Southeast Texas area took the second spot for gas completions with 20.
